Hydropower plants have massive social and environmental impacts. Since 2008, GegenStrömung has been working to support those affected, particularly in the Global South, and to change the political framework in such a way that these impacts are addressed and harmful projects are not implemented.
Our approach involves German actors in global economic and political structures. Whether German companies that build or finance dams abroad, foreign trade promotion or development policy of the German government or political frameworks in European and international energy policy – decisions made in Germany have a global impact. We influence these decisions through educational and campaigning work and support those affected by dams in making their voices heard in Germany.
